Return to "Normal"
The students and teachers at Virginia Tech returned to the campus and their classes today. I know this because the news is inundated with stories about it. I find it interesting to hear a blip on CNN Headline News that the student government at V-Tech had asked the reporters and news agencies to remove themselves from campus today. Thank God for some common sense!!
Yes, what happened was, and is, a horrific event, but for the news agencies to think they have a newsworthy story about the students coming back to campus is appalling. The students and faculty need time to adjust to the empty desks and seats, not worry about what to say to the media about their experience with regard to the shooting. They need time to deal with what they saw – not through questions from the media, but rather amongst themselves and with counselors or therapists. For the media to interfere and want to know all the “juicy” details is disgusting.
Why would anyone want to hear yet another horrible story about the shooting? It makes more sense to me to let the students and faculty mourn and grieve in private, to allow them to heal without having to open themselves up to the scrutiny of the public. I don’t want to see video of students unloading their cars, carrying their belongings back into their dorms, hugging friends and classmates. It shouldn’t be something for public consumption. While the shooting was a public event, the healing process of the students and faculty at Virginia Tech is something that should be done in private, without the prying lenses and microphones of the media.
