My original post for our YouTube assignment was removed recently. This was done upon the suggestion of someone who thought that, given the recent events of Don Imus being fired by NBC for his racially charged comments on the air about the Rutgers women’s basketball team, and the content of the video I chose, it might cause more than a bit of fallout from my classmates as well as anyone else reading my blog.
While I agree with the opinion of the person who made the suggestion, I find it abhorrent that we live in a society where political correctness has become so prevalent. We are afraid to say what we really think, to write how we really feel. We have become a society that makes sure that what they’re saying doesn’t offend anyone. The First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States prohibits infringement upon freedom of speech, however, in my opinion, it is society as a whole (I’ll keep my political beliefs out of this one) that has slowly eroded this right. We have become a society in which we so carefully guard our speech – whether it is the spoken word, written text, or video.
While I’m not saying that we have the right to purposely go out of our way to offend someone by using racial epithets or bigotry, I don’t believe that we should have to couch what we say in the language of political correctness. The country singer, Tim McGraw, has a fantastic song called “Back When” that pretty much sums up some of my thoughts…..
