How fast can you text the word "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” on your cell phone? A thirteen year old girl from Claysburg, Pennsylvania can do it in fifteen seconds. She can also now spend $25,000 because of her nimble fingers.
On Saturday, April 21, 2007 in the Roseland Ballroom in Manhattan, a contest was held by the electronics company, LG, to determine the National Champion in test messages. There were almost 200 contestants for this contest, and the thirteen year old girl beat out a 21-year old from Los Angeles to win the coveted title. She was quoted as saying, “I’m going to go shopping and buy lots and lots of clothes.” She went on to say that she estimates that she sends almost 8000 text messages a month to her family and friends.
Wow, what a wonderful thing to announce that she’s going to go shopping for clothes! Give me a break. I can’t help but wonder how much of that money her parents should have her to give to them for her monthly cell phone bill. What makes it even more ridiculous for me is that she’s allowed to have a cell phone plan that would accommodate her text message allotment.
If she truly does send about 8000 text messages a month, in a 30-day month she would send approximately 267 text messages per day. In a 24-hour period she would send about 11 text messages per hour. So, if she slept for 8 of those hours, she would have to send 16 text messages per hour. What the hell else does she do with her time?? I can’t help but wonder what kind of grades she gets in school and what other activities she is involved in. I also wonder if she’s going to send text messages while she’s on her shopping trip.
